ART ISLANDS

The Art Islands in the Seto Inland Sea - Japan

WHAT’S

INSIDE:

Japan’s art islands in the Seto Inland Sea offer a compelling mix of creativity and calm coastal life. Destinations like Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima have evolved into immersive cultural spaces where contemporary works blend with traditional island villages. Installations by artists such as Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell, and buildings designed by Tadao Ando and SANAA appear across beaches, hillsides, and quiet villages. The journey between islands adds to the appeal, with short ferry rides offering expansive sea views. These islands provide a slower, more reflective travel experience, making them an inviting alternative to Japan’s busier cultural centers. There may be no better setting to take in some of the world’s best art and architecture.

If you are traveling to the art islands for the first time there are a few things to keep in mind. As the largest island with the most projects, Naoshima makes the best ‘home base’ for your visit. The islands can be reached by ferry. To make the most of your visit 3-4 days are recommended. If you only have 1 day you should plan to only see Naoshima. Plan to give 1 day each to Teshima and Inujima, leaving 1-2 days for Naoshima. There are limited options for where to stay, the most noteworthy is the Benesse House Hotel. That said, there are more affordable rental and Inn options available. Be sure to book in advance. Plan to rent bikes as this is the best way to travel around the island.
