James Turrell

ABOUT THE ARITST

James Turrell is an American artist known for working with light, space, and perception rather than traditional materials like paint or stone. Born in 1943 in Los Angeles, he became associated with the Light and Space movement in Southern California. His artworks often use carefully controlled natural or artificial light to shape how viewers experience a room or environment. Turrell designs spaces where light appears solid or where boundaries between walls and ceilings seem to dissolve. One of his most significant long-term projects is the transformation of an extinct volcano in Arizona into a large-scale artwork focused on celestial observation. His installations are typically quiet and minimal, encouraging slow looking and awareness of vision itself. Through his work, Turrell explores how humans see, sense, and understand space, making perception the central subject of his art.

ACCESS:

DISCRIPTION:

The House of Light is a permanent installation in rural Niigata designed by artist James Turrell and completed in 2000 as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. The building is intended to be lived in, allowing visitors to experience light as a physical and emotional presence over time. Its architecture is inspired by traditional Japanese houses, with simple rooms, sliding partitions, and a close connection to the outdoors. A large portion of the roof is retractable, framing the sky. Carefully integrated artificial lighting alters surfaces changing the frame around the sky as day turns to night (and vice versa). Rather than displaying objects, the house itself functions as the artwork, using architecture to heighten awareness of perception, time, and natural light.

NOTES:

You are able to book a private nights stay at the House of Light, enjoying the work of art in privacy. For fans of Turrell or art in general this is an experience you will not soon forget. Don't miss out on the large pool on the lower floor at night.

ADDRESS:

Japan, 〒761-3110 Kagawa, Kagawa District, Naoshima, 本村733

ACCESS:

Minamidera requires a ticket with a specific date and time. ¥700 on site or ¥600 when purchased online. Children 5 and under are not permitted to enter.

DISCRIPTION:

Minamidera Art House is a permanent installation in the Honmura district of Naoshima that presents a light-based work by James Turrell. Completed in 1999, the building was designed by Tadao Ando as a quiet, enclosed structure that supports an intense sensory experience. From the outside, the architecture is restrained and solid, with thick concrete walls and no visible openings to the landscape. Inside, visitors enter a dark space where vision slowly adjusts, allowing subtle light to emerge and define the room. The absence of windows and visual distractions heightens awareness of time, perception, and bodily presence. The building’s simple geometry and controlled enclosure place full emphasis on light as the primary medium. Rather than acting as a gallery, Minamidera functions as a contemplative environment where architecture and art merge into a single experience.

NOTES:

Do not skip this one. It is a sensory experience that is quite powerful, and one you won't soon forget.
