DISCRIPTION:
MoMA PS1, located in Long Island City, Queens, occupies a former public school building repurposed into a contemporary art space. Its architecture reflects a raw, industrial character that aligns with its experimental mission. The structure retains many of its original features—brick walls, long corridors, and classroom layouts—creating a dynamic contrast between old and new. Rather than conceal its past, the design embraces it, allowing artists to interact with the space in unconventional ways. Outdoor areas, including the courtyard, serve as platforms for seasonal installations and events, further blurring the boundaries between art and environment. The building’s unrefined textures and flexible interiors foster an atmosphere of creative freedom, distinguishing it from more traditional, polished museums. MoMA PS1 stands as a bold example of adaptive reuse, where the architecture supports innovation and risk-taking, mirroring the institution’s focus on emerging and experimental contemporary art.
NOTES:
Admission to New Yorkers is FREE! Make sure you don’t miss James Turrell's Meeting (skyspace) on the 3rd floor. This is Turrell’s only permanent installation in New York CIty. Artbook, the on site bookstore is also a must. This a great art and design bookstore and there is no shortage of unique or hard to find publications available. Last but not least, PS1 host summer parties called Warm Up. The museum host a great line up of musical guests in the courtyard and drinks are available outside. The museum stays open and you can view the exhibitions during the party. This may go down as your most rowdy museum outing. These events have separate tickets/prices.
Aside from James Turrell’s Meeting, any other exhibition photographed below will likely not be on view during your visit.
