Chichu Art Museum is a contemporary museum on Naoshima Island designed by Tadao Ando and completed in 2004. The building is constructed largely beneath the ground, allowing the natural landscape and coastal scenery above to remain visually intact. Rather than relying on artificial lighting, the museum is shaped around carefully positioned openings that bring daylight into the galleries, causing the interior atmosphere to change with time and weather. The structure is defined by crisp geometric forms and exposed concrete surfaces, creating a calm and controlled setting for art. Visitors move through a sequence of corridors, courtyards, and rooms that gradually reveal the sky and surrounding environment. This approach makes architecture, light, and nature inseparable from the experience of viewing the artworks. Works by Claude Monet, Walter de Maria, and James Turrell are on display.
