The Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, designed by Foreign Office Architects and completed in the early 2000s, is known for redefining port architecture through fluid form and public accessibility. Instead of a traditional building with clear facades, the terminal is conceived as a continuous folded surface that merges roof, floor, and landscape. Its structure relies on a complex steel plate system that allows large, column-free interiors while supporting heavy passenger traffic. Circulation is organized through gently sloping ramps rather than stairs, creating an uninterrupted flow for travelers and visitors alike. The exterior deck functions as an elevated public park, offering panoramic views of the harbor and city. By blurring boundaries between infrastructure and urban space, the terminal operates simultaneously as transportation hub, civic plaza, and architectural landmark.
