Le Corbusier

ABOUT THE ARITST

Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, was a Swiss-French architect whose ideas reshaped modern architecture in the 20th century. He promoted functional design guided by proportion, light, and efficiency, outlining his “Five Points of Architecture,” which included pilotis, free plans, and roof gardens. His work ranges from private houses like Villa Savoye to large urban visions and civic buildings such as the Unité d’Habitation and the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, India. He also developed the Modulor, a proportional system based on the human body. Known for using reinforced concrete in bold, sculptural ways, his later projects embraced heavier forms and expressive surfaces. Le Corbusier’s theories on urban planning and standardized living had a profound and sometimes controversial global influence.

Saint-Pierre in Firminy, designed by Le Corbusier in the 1960s and completed decades after his death, is a sculptural church that reflects his late architectural language. The building rises as a truncated cone, its sloping concrete walls forming a stark, monumental presence within the Firminy-Vert complex. Inside, light enters through small, carefully placed openings that project patterns across the interior, including constellations and geometric shapes. The plan is compact and inward-focused, emphasizing contemplation rather than procession. Construction was delayed for many years and only finished in 2006, guided by Le Corbusier’s original drawings. The church stands as one of his final designs, combining spiritual symbolism with raw material expression and precise control of light.
