The Echigo Matsunoyama Kyororo Forest School is a nature-focused educational facility in Niigata Prefecture designed by Tezuka Architects and completed in 2003. The building stretches horizontally along a wooded slope, following the contours of the terrain rather than imposing a rigid form. Its elongated structure allows visitors to move gradually through the forest while remaining sheltered indoors. The exterior is finished in weathering steel, chosen for its durability in a harsh climate and for the way its changing surface color echoes the surrounding earth and trees. An observation tower rises from the low structure, offering elevated views of the forest canopy and mountains beyond. The architecture is carefully adapted to heavy snowfall and seasonal changes, reinforcing a close relationship between the building, environmental education, and the landscape it inhabits. This is a natural history museum that focuses on local ecologies and environmental education.
