DISCRIPTION:
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, stands out with its spiraling, organic form that breaks from traditional museum design. Its continuous ramp gallery offers a fluid viewing experience, encouraging movement and exploration. Set against Manhattan’s rigid grid, the building’s curved silhouette and smooth concrete surface make it an enduring architectural icon and a bold expression of modernist ideals. The programmatic flow of this museum was revolutionary and has been replicated or expanded on by architects who followed Wright all over the world. The museum is relatively small in size, however it makes up for this with quality major exhibits and exceptional works in their permanent collection that are rotated regularly.
NOTES:
Ticket prices are high, especially considering the relatively small size of the museum, but the Guggenheim does pay as you wish on Monday and Saturday from 4-5:30pm. If you are drawn to architecture, this one is worth a visit despite the crowds and cost. More so than many other NY museums, the architecture is as much of a draw for visitors as the art inside.
