After studying at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Cooper Union in New York, he established his own practice in Tokyo in 1985. Ban became known for experimenting with unconventional materials, especially recycled paper tubes, which he has used in both temporary relief shelters and permanent buildings. His disaster response projects include emergency housing for communities affected by earthquakes, tsunamis, and conflicts around the world. At the same time, he has designed major cultural works such as the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France and the Oita Prefectural Art Museum in Japan. In 2014, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in recognition of his socially engaged practice and technical ingenuity.

Shutter House, designed by Shigeru Ban in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, redefines urban living through a blend of industrial elegance and adaptable design. The building’s most distinctive feature is its movable, perforated metal shutters that allow residents to control light, privacy, and ventilation—blurring the boundary between interior and exterior space. This flexible façade responds to changing needs and environmental conditions, reflecting Ban’s ongoing exploration of functionality and transparency. The structure combines glass, steel, and concrete in a refined yet minimal composition, with duplex residences that emphasize open, airy interiors and double-height spaces. Ban’s approach prioritizes user interaction and modularity, creating a dynamic experience within a calm architectural language. Shutter House stands as a thoughtful integration of modernist aesthetics and responsive design in a dense urban fabric, staying true to Ban’s principles of innovation, sustainability, and simplicity.
