The Pinault Collection in Paris occupies the historic Bourse de Commerce, merging 18th-century architectural grandeur with contemporary art. Originally designed as a commodities exchange, the building retains its circular form and elaborately decorated dome, while Tadao Ando’s intervention introduces a minimalist concrete cylinder inside, creating a striking contrast between old and new. This architectural dialogue allows visitors to experience modern art within a historical context, where the past and present coexist in a single, fluid space.
The circular rotunda serves as the heart of the museum, guiding visitors through exhibitions of large-scale installations, sculptures, and multimedia works. Ando’s restrained concrete forms enhance the natural light filtering through the restored glass dome, providing a serene backdrop that emphasizes the artworks’ scale and detail. The building’s spatial dynamics invite contemplation, encouraging interaction between the viewer, the art, and the architecture itself.
DESCRIPTION:
This one is well worth the visit for both the art collection and architectural addition by Tadao Ando
