DISCRIPTION:
Opus 40 is a monumental earthwork sculpture located in Saugerties, New York, created over nearly four decades by artist Harvey Fite. Spanning 6.5 acres within a former bluestone quarry, the site is an intricate composition of stone ramps, terraces, stairs, and walkways built entirely by hand using traditional dry-stone masonry techniques. The structure integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings in the Hudson Valley, forming a landscape that is both artistic and architectural. At its center stands a massive monolith, anchoring the flowing design. Fite originally envisioned it as a setting for his sculptures but ultimately transformed the land itself into a singular artistic expression. Visitors today can explore the site’s pathways and surrounding buildings, including a museum and blacksmith shop. Opus 40 also serves as a cultural venue, hosting concerts, workshops, and community events, offering a deep connection to the region’s history, geology, and artistic legacy.
NOTES:
The sculpture is quite large and can take some time to explore fully, make sure you bring water. This can be a great place to bring kids, but keep in mind there are no guardrails and it can definitely be dangerous if you don’t properly supervise you children. Treat you time on the property like to would a moderate hike and make sure your children both respect the sculpture and stay safe.
