DISCRIPTION:

The Sphere by Fritz Koenig is a monumental bronze sculpture that has become an enduring symbol of resilience and remembrance. Originally installed in the plaza between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the abstract, globe-like form was meant to evoke world peace through international trade. After surviving the 9/11 attacks with visible damage, the sculpture was recovered from the debris and later relocated to Liberty Park, overlooking the 9/11 Memorial. Its dented, scorched surface was left unrepaired, transforming the work from a symbol of unity into one of survival and memory. The tension between its original intent and its altered state gives The Sphere a haunting presence. It invites contemplation of both human vulnerability and strength, standing quietly amid the city’s rebuilt skyline. As both artwork and artifact, it bridges the space between public monument and personal reflection, making it one of New York’s most poignant memorials.

NOTES:

Following the collapse of the World Trade Towers in 2001, The Sphere was moved to Battery Park where it was on display until it was moved to it's final home back in the rebuild World Trade Center.
