DISCRIPTION:
Forrest Myers’ The Wall, located on a building facade in SoHo, is a bold example of public art integrated seamlessly with urban architecture. Installed in 1973, the sculpture features a grid of brightly colored aluminum bars that project outward in a rhythmic pattern. Its composition brings order and movement to an otherwise blank wall, transforming a passive surface into a lively visual experience. The work exemplifies Myers’ interest in minimalism, geometry, and the interaction between art and the built environment. By using industrial materials and a modular system, the sculpture reflects the aesthetics of its time while remaining timeless in its clarity and impact. The Wall not only enlivens the streetscape but also challenges perceptions of where and how art can exist in the city. It stands as a lasting testament to SoHo’s legacy as a hub for artistic experimentation and the dialogue between art, space, and community.
NOTES:
An iconic work, that was once removed and later reinstalled, it is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to SoHo’.
