DISCRIPTION:
909 Third Avenue is a 32-story modernist office tower in Midtown Manhattan, completed in the late 1960s by Emery Roth & Sons with Max O. Urbahn Associates. The building is known for its bold, Brutalist-inspired design featuring a striking precast concrete façade with deep waffle-like coffers that create strong shadow patterns. It occupies an entire city block and includes a solid brick podium that houses a post office. A raised plaza at the base, built as a privately owned public space, adds openness to the dense urban context. The structure’s massing and materials reflect a mid-century corporate architectural aesthetic.
NOTES:
The is a sculpture by Ann Gillen on the plaza and directly across the streel is Philip Johnson's 885 Third Ave, also known as the Lipstick Building.
