Axe Majeur, conceived by Dani Karavan in collaboration with Ricardo Bofill in the 1980s at Cergy-Pontoise near Paris, is a monumental landscape intervention organized as a 3-kilometer linear sequence. It aligns terraces, plazas, a red footbridge, and a series of columns along a strong axis that extends toward the Oise River. Rather than a single object, the project unfolds as a procession, guiding movement through open fields and constructed elements. Each segment frames views, emphasizes horizon lines, and establishes a dialogue between architecture and terrain. Karavan’s design merges sculpture, urban planning, and landscape design, creating a civic space intended for walking, gathering, and reflection within a rapidly developed suburban context.
