The new Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris marks the institution’s relocation to a larger, more central site, expanding its ability to present ambitious exhibitions. Established in 1984, the foundation has built an international collection focused on contemporary art, with strengths in installation, photography, design, and works that engage science, architecture, and anthropology. Its program emphasizes dialogue across disciplines and cultures, often commissioning new pieces rather than relying solely on existing works. The new building is designed to support flexible display formats and public programming, reinforcing the foundation’s mission to make contemporary creation accessible while encouraging experimentation and collaboration. Designed by the same architect who designed the original location, Atelier Jean Nouvel reinterprets transparency and layering through glass and steel. Planned as a relocation, it continues the foundation’s focus on flexible exhibition spaces while integrating more closely with the surrounding urban fabric.
DESCRIPTION:
The original Cartier foundation, also by Jean Nouvel will be repurposed, but the decision for how it will be used has not yet been made public.
